- Sigismund , King of the Burgundians tries to approach Ostrom and arouses the anger of his father-in-law Theodoric the Great ; his son Sigerich also turns against him, Sigismund later has him strangled.
- Patricius Flavius Agapitus becomes consul in the empire of the Ostrogoths .
- around 517: Sigismund of Burgundy marries his daughter to the Frankish king Theuderich I. It is not certain whether she is identical to Queen Suavegotta, mentioned in a West Franconian chronicle .

- April 5 : Timothy I , Patriarch of Constantinople , dies. No successor will be appointed until the end of the year. His predecessor Makedonios II, who was deposed at his instigation in 511, dies in the same year.
- September: The Burgundian kingdom is chaired by Bishop Avitus of Vienne , a resolute opponent of Arianism , the Council of Epaone held. Among other things, the erection of wooden altars is prohibited.
- Timothy IV becomes Patriarch of Alexandria and Pope of the Coptic Church .
