Eugendus
Eugendus (* around 450 in Izernore , Département Ain ; † 510 or 517 in Saint-Claude (Jura) ) was the fourth abbot of the Condat monastery and is a saint. It is also known under the French name Oyend .
According to his legend, which according to recent research can be described as authentic, Eugendus was given up for training in the Condat Monastery at the age of seven . Later he entered the order and followed the example of the monastery founders Romanus and Lupicinus , remaining in the monastery order until the end of his life. Eugendus acquired a good knowledge of Latin and Greek and was well versed in the scriptures. Around the year 496 he was appointed abbot of the monastery. Eugendus played a key role in the development of pre-Benedictine monasticism in Gaul , and was influenced by earlier rules of the order (including the rule of John Cassianus ).
His feast day is January 2nd and January 4th in the dioceses of Besançon and Saint-Claude .
