Romanus by Condat
Romanus von Condat (* around 400 in Burgundy ; † 463 or 464 in Saint-Claude ) was a hermit and founder of a monastery and is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church . It is also known by the French form of the name Saint Romain de Condat.
At the age of 35, Romanus left his family and spent some time in the Ainay monastery near Lyon . He then retired to live as a hermit. In 444 he was ordained a priest by Bishop Hilary of Arles . Together with his brother, St. Lupicinus , he founded several monasteries around 450 in the Haut-Jura region. a. Condat (today Saint-Claude ), Leuconne, with his sister Iola the women's convent La Beaume (today Saint-Romain-de-Roche ) and probably also Romainmôtier in the canton of Vaud (Switzerland). Romanus was the first abbot to take over the management of the Condat Monastery until his death.
He was buried in Pratz in Franche-Comté in the monastery of La Beaume, where his relics are also kept.
His feast day in the Catholic calendar of saints is February 28 (in leap years February 29 ), also called Romanus Day after him . The farmer's rule for this day is: Saint Roman bright and clear means a good year .
