Hilary of Arles
Hilarius von Arles (* 401 ; † 449 ) was a late antique bishop in the southern French city of Arles in the 5th century .
Life
Hilarius was converted to Christianity by his uncle, Bishop Honoratus . After he had sold his inheritance, he went to a strictly ascetic monastery on the Îles de Lérins , the Lérins Abbey . Around the year 430 he was chosen as successor by Honoratus because of his intellectual abilities and the good way of life.
Hilarius tried to promote asceticism in the clergy and opposed the Augustinian doctrine of predestination . His sermons were of a rather simple style. After he got involved in a dispute with Pope Leo I , he was deposed as bishop by him in 445.
