Honoratus of Arles
Honoratus von Arles (* in Belgian Gaul ; † January 16, 429 or 430 in Arelate ) was bishop in what is now Arles ( southern France ) in the 5th century and is a saint .
Honoratus came from a consul family and was educated accordingly. He converted to Christianity as a teenager . At first he lived in a hermitage in Greece . He later returned to Gaul and lived in seclusion in the mountains of Fréjus . After his ordination as a priest , he founded a monastery based on the oriental model on the island of Saint-Honorat ( Îles de Lérins ) , the Lérins Abbey , which was strongly ascetic and soon developed into a spiritual center of Gaul. In 426 Honoratus was consecrated Bishop of Arles against his will . His term of office was characterized by dedication and charity .
His biographer was his nephew and successor Hilarius von Arles .
His feast day is January 16.
