The Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint-Claude ( Latin Dioecesis Sancti Claudii , French Diocèse de Saint-Claude ) is in France located Roman Catholic diocese . The main church of the diocese, the cathedral Saint-Pierre, Saint-Paul et Saint-André , is located in Saint-Claude , but the seat of the diocese is in Lons-le-Saunier, about 60 km away (since 2017 in Poligny ). The extent of the diocese corresponds to the Jura department .

history

The diocese was established in 1742 by Pope Benedict XIV and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Lyon as a suffragan . On November 29, 1801, the diocese of Saint-Claude was dissolved and the area was incorporated into the Archdiocese of Besançon . The diocese of Saint-Claude was re-established on October 6, 1822 by Pope Pius VII with the Apostolic Constitution Paternae charitatis and again subordinated to the Archdiocese of Lyon as a suffragan.
