history

The Archdiocese of Auch was established as a suffragan in the 6th century . In 879, Pope John VIII raised the diocese to a metropolitan diocese by uniting it with the territory of the previous archdiocese of Eauze . Later it had these suffragan seats :

  1. Diocese of Aire
  2. Diocese of Bayonne
  3. Bazas diocese
  4. Diocese of Comminges
  5. Diocese of Couserans
  6. Diocese of Dax
  7. Diocese of Lectoure
  8. Diocese of Lescar
  9. Diocese of Oloron
  10. Diocese of Tarbes

On November 29, 1801 , the Archdiocese of Auch was dissolved and the area was incorporated into the Diocese of Agen .

The archbishopric was also re-established on October 6, 1822 by Pope Pius VII with the Apostolic Constitution Paternae charitatis and had these suffragan seats:

  1. Diocese of Aire
  2. Diocese of Bayonne
  3. Diocese of Tarbes

On December 16 , 2002 , the Archdiocese also lost its status as a metropolitan seat and was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Toulouse as a suffragan seat.

The archbishops have held the confirmed title of primate of Novempopulana and Navarre both since the 17th century and again since 1829 .

A criminal case against the incumbent local bishop of Auch, Archbishop Maurice Gardes , the incumbent Bishop of Nevers , Thierry Brac de la Perriere , and the incumbent Archbishop of Lyon , Cardinal Philippe Barbarin , for covering up sexual abuse was opened on January 7 of 2019.
