Diocese of Oloron

The French diocese of Oloron was founded in the 6th century at the latest, from around 580 it was orphaned due to the conquest of the Basques . It was not until 1056 that it received a regular bishop again . A significant contribution to the renewal of ecclesial life, going out via the Diocese of Oloron and Aquitaine and Gascony comprehensive, Bishop had Amatus of Oloron (1073-1089), who as papal legate numerous provincial synods initiated and subsequently Archbishop of Bordeaux was.

On June 22, 1809, the diocese, together with the diocese of Lescar , was incorporated into the diocese of Bayonne as a result of the Concordat of 1801 .
