The French diocese of Albi and later the archbishopric of Albi ( Latin : Archidioecesis Albiensis ) with the bishopric in the city of Albi was founded in late antiquity .
The Gregorian reforms are so difficult here that in 1083 the papal legate Hugues de Die first had to depose Bishop Frotard, who had bought the diocese from the Vice Count of Albi for the price of 15 horses.
Although the city's residents were inclined to the Cathars , Albi only played a minor role in this drama. Nevertheless, Cardinal Aubry and Bernhard von Clairvaux opposed the teachings of the heretic Henri in 1145 . In 1178 Roger Trencavel imprisoned the bishop who led the fight against the Cathars.
The old episcopal palace was replaced around 1265 by the fortified Palais de la Berbie next to the cathedral . Bishop Bernard de Castanet began the restoration of the Sainte-Cécile cathedral after 1282, which was not completed until the end of the 14th century.
In 1317 the diocese of Albi in the south-east was reduced in size, from the separated piece the diocese of Castres was formed, which, like the mother diocese of Albi, remained the suffragan diocese of Bourges for another three centuries .
Later, in 1678, the diocese of Albi itself became a metropolitan bishopric , to which, up to the Concordat of 1801 , five other dioceses belonged to Albi and Castres.
Today the Archdiocese of Albi belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Toulouse .
