Bernard de Castanet

Bernard de Castanet (* around 1240 in Montpellier , † August 14, 1317 in Avignon ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

After he became a Dr. jur. at the University of Montpellier , he became Archdeacon of La Fenelet , in the Archdiocese of Narbonne , and Archdeacon of the Cathedral of Mallorca . At the same time as Professor of Law, he became chaplain of Pope Gregory X , auditor of the Apostolic Palace and the Rota Romana in 1266 . He was also promoted to Archdeacon of Narbonne .

Raised Bishop of Albi on March 7, 1276 , he laid the foundation stone for today's cathedral on August 15, 1282 , after he had transferred the cathedral chapter to a community of secular clergy in 1297, he founded a Dominican monastery in Albi . On behalf of the French king , he turned in 1297 with a request for the canonization of King Louis IX. from France to Pope Boniface VIII .

From 1307 to 1308 there was a trial against him at the papal curia , where he was accused of simony , various legal offenses and irregularities. Since the process went to his disadvantage, he was transferred to the lower-ranking bishopric of Le Puy on July 30, 1308 .

Pope John XXII. who was the first to reside only in Avignon , raised him on December 17, 1316 to titular cardinal bishop of Porto-Santa Rufina .

His tomb is in Avignon Cathedral .
