The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montpellier (-Lodève, Beziers, Agde, et Saint-Pons-de-Thomières) , Latin Archidioecesis Montis Pessulani (-Lotevensis-Biterrensis-Agathensis-Sancti Pontii Thomeriarum ) is in the south of France located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in France based in Montpellier .
The territory of the archbishopric is in the French region of Occitania and its borders coincide with those of the Hérault département .
history
The diocese was possibly founded as the Maguelone diocese in Languedoc as early as the 3rd century and moved the bishopric to Montpellier on March 27, 1536 . Subordinated to the Archdiocese of Avignon as a suffragan diocese , it changed its name to its current name on June 16, 1877, adding the names of the dioceses of its area secularized by the Concordat of 1801 to its diocesan name.
As part of the diocesan reforms of December 16, 2002, the diocese was elevated to a metropolitan bishopric and received four suffragan seats.
