Church province of Dijon

The diocese of Autun ( Latin : Dioecesis Augustodunensis , French : Diocèse d'Autun ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in France , which extends over the area of the Saône-et-Loire department . Benoît Rivière has been bishop since 2006 .

history

The history of the church in today's diocese of Autun goes back to the two martyrs Valerius in Tournus and Marcellus in Chalon-sur-Saône , who preached there at the end of the 2nd century . In the 3rd century the diocese was canonically established. In 1801 the areas of the dioceses Chalon and Clamecy and parts of the diocese of Mâcon were added. In 1962 it was also merged with the Cluny Territorial Abbey . That is why it is officially called Autun-Châlon-Mâcon-Cluny .

Until 2002 it was the suffragan diocese of Lyon , now it belongs to the Archdiocese of Dijon .
