The Roman Catholic Diocese of Belley-Ars ( Latin Dioecesis Bellicensis-Arsensis , French Diocèse de Belley-Ars ) is in France located Roman Catholic diocese based in Belley .
history
The diocese of Belley-Ars was established in the 5th century as the diocese of Belley and subordinated to the archdiocese of Besançon as a suffragan . The diocese gave up parts of its territory in 1515 to establish the diocese of Bourg-en-Bresse , which was dissolved again in 1534. On November 29, 1801, the Belley diocese was dissolved and the area was annexed to the Archdiocese of Lyon . The diocese of Belley was re-established on October 6, 1822 by Pope Pius VII with the Apostolic Constitution Paternae charitatis and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Besançon as a suffragan. In 1949 the diocese of Belley was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Lyon as a suffragan. On January 23, 1988, the name of the Belley diocese was given in honor of St. Pastor of Ars, Jean-Marie Vianney , whose parish belongs to the diocese, expanded into the diocese of Belley-Ars .
