The Belley Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Jean de Belley) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the French city of Belley , the St. John the Baptist was consecrated. It is the cathedral of the diocese of Belley-Ars and the seat of the bishop.

history

The existence of a diocese can be proven in Belley until the 5th century. The first mention of a cathedral dates back to 722 when the cathedral received a relic of John the Baptist. It is a bone from his right hand.

A Romanesque church was built in the twelfth century , the nave of which was preserved until the 19th century. The chapels in the apse were rebuilt in Gothic style and completed in 1520.

The cathedral suffered badly during the French Revolution . She lost her relics and the two towers were destroyed. She was also secularized . In 1822 the cathedral was additionally damaged by an earthquake. In 1823 the disbanded bishopric was restored. From 1835 to 1853, the cathedral was almost completely rebuilt under the direction of Bishop Alexander Devic. The architect Antoine-Marie Chenavard from Lyon realized a building in the neo-Gothic style. The chapels of the apse were retained, as was the north portal on the north transept , which was formerly the main entrance to the cathedral. The nave , the transept and the facade of the cathedral were renewed. The cathedral was consecrated on July 2, 1878 by Bishop Marchal.

building

The cathedral has three naves with four bays and was extended by a transept and the choir with five bays. The apse has five chapels. Two more chapels open on either side of the corridor. The entire building extends over a length of 78.40 meters, is 32.10 meters wide and 17 meters above the main nave and 9.50 meters above the transepts.

organ

The organ was built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll from 1858 to 1860 . The instrument was initially at ground level behind the altar. In 1875 the organ was placed on the organ gallery and expanded. Today the instrument has 48 registers on three manuals and a pedal. The actions are electro-pneumatic.
