history
Belley is the historic capital of the Bugey (Pagus Belliceusis); At the end of the 10th century it belonged to the Holy Roman Empire , from the 11th century the place was under the sovereignty of the Count of Savoy . The Bishop of Belley also played a major role . After his death, Bishop Anthelme de Chignin (in office from 1163 to 1178), who was regarded as the patron saint of Belley, was recognized by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa as Prince of the Empire and opposed Humbert III. of Savoy .
In 1385 almost the entire city was destroyed by fire. When it was rebuilt, it was surrounded by a city wall. Already annexed from 1536 to 1559, Belley finally came to France under King Henry IV through the Treaty of Lyon (signed January 17, 1601). It was under the Intendance de Bourgogne , but became the seat of a royal bailiwick ( Bailliage ). Belley became a sub-prefecture under Napoleon I , and in 1823 the bishopric, which had been dissolved during the Revolution, was restored.
