Corbonod is a French commune with 1,264 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Hauteville-Lompnes and the Arrondissement Belley . The municipal administration is located in the Gignez district.

geography

Corbonod is 350  m above Seyssel , about 16 kilometers south of the town of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and 52 km east-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The village extends in a panoramic location on a plateau at the eastern foot of the Jura ridge , which stretches north from the Grand Colombier to the Crêt du Nu , around 100 m above the Rhone valley floor .

The area of ​​the municipal area of ​​31.59 km 2 covers a section of the Rhône valley. The eastern part of the municipality is taken up by the plateau of Corbonod, which lies at an average of 350  m . It drops to the east with a steep slope and is subdivided by the valleys of short side streams of the Rhône. The eastern border runs along the Rhône, which flows here in an open valley from north to south. Below Corbonod, the Rhône is dammed by a dam (Barrage de Seyssel).

To the west, the community area extends over the steep and mostly densely wooded Jura slope to the adjoining ridge of the Grand Colombier. From a geological point of view, this ridge forms an anticline consisting of sediments from the Upper Jurassic period . In the north the border is marked by the erosion valley of the Dorche . Above around 1200  m there are wide plateaus that are mainly used as mountain pastures. At 1363  m , the highest point of Corbonod is reached in the area of Sur Lyand (viewpoint).

In addition to the actual village, Corbonod also includes various villages, hamlets and farms, including (ordered from north to south):

  • Orbagnoux ( 420  m ) south of the Dorche valley cut
  • Puthier ( 410  m ) on the plateau at the foot of the Jura
  • Siland ( 390  m ) on the plateau at the foot of the Jura
  • Étranginaz ( 380  m ) on a ledge in the area of ​​the Vallon de la Combe
  • Eilloux ( 300  m ) on the western slope of the Rhône valley
  • Gignez ( 370  m ) on the plateau at the foot of the Jura, the largest village in the municipality and seat of the municipal administration
  • Fontaine ( 390  m ) on the plateau at the foot of the Jura
  • Charbonnière ( 430  m ) on the lower eastern slope of the Grand Colombier

Neighboring communities of Corbonod are Chanay in the north, Bassy , Seyssel (Haute-Savoie) and Seyssel (Ain) in the east, Anglefort in the south, Arvière-en-Valromey in the south-west and Haut-Valromey in the west.

history

The municipality of Corbonod was already populated during Roman times, as various finds indicate.

In the Middle Ages , Corbonod was part of the Seyssel lordship, but there were also properties on what is now the municipality that belonged to other lords. With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The parish church of Corbonod was built in Gothic styles. The bell tower in front of the portal dates from 1721. Characteristic stove houses can be found in several villages . At Siland there are the ruins of a medieval castle.

With 1264 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Corbonod is one of the smaller communities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century, since the beginning of the 1960s only relatively small fluctuations in the population have been recorded. Only in the last few years has there been strong population growth thanks to the attractive location.

Economy and Infrastructure

Corbonod was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Even today, viticulture on the slopes around Corbonod plays an important role as a source of income for the locals. The vineyards belong to the Seyssel designation of origin, which has been protected since 1942, and are mainly used to grow the white Altesse grape variety , which is prescribed for Seyssel still wines. Of 23 farms (as of 2012), winegrowers make up the majority. There are also some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D991 departmental road from Seyssel to Châtillon-en-Michaille . Further road connections exist with Culoz and via the Col de la Biche with Brénaz. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 25 kilometers away.
