The Church of Torcieu |
Torcieu is a French municipality with 726 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is assigned to the arrondissement of Belley and the canton of Ambérieu-en-Bugey .
geography
location
Torcieu is located at 265 m , about 35 kilometers southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse and 30 kilometers west of Belley (as the crow flies) in the southern French Jura mountains. Neighboring municipalities of Torcieu are Ambérieu-en-Bugey in the north, Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey in the east, Cleyzieu and Souclin in the south and Vaux-en-Bugey and Bettant in the west.
topography
The area of the 10.72 km 2 municipal area covers part of the strongly reliefed western foothills of the Bugey landscape and includes a bend in the Albarine valley between Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey and Ambérieu-en-Bugey. The river cuts through the Jura mountain ranges in a deeply cut cross valley , the Cluse des Hôpitaux . The area stretches on both sides of the Albarine up to the surrounding mountain ranges. The highest point is 782 m on the southern edge of the municipality below the summit of Mont Falcon . The Ravinet stream flows from the south into the municipality and flows into the Albarine next to the railway bridge.
Local division
The town center lies on the flat valley floor, which is somewhat widened at this point, between the right bank of the Albarine and the foot of the mountain formations that form the western foothills of the Jura. There are also the following hamlets upstream:
- Montferrand ( 274 m ) on the left bank of the Albarine,
- le Chauchay and les Combes , directly next to each other at about 280 m on the right bank of the Albarine,
- Mont de Lange ( 450 m ) on a mountain ledge between the Ravine valley and the Falconnière plateau reaching up to around 700 m .
history
Evidence of late Bronze Age settlement has been found in two of the countless caves in the municipality . Torcieu first appears in Latin scripts as Torciacus in the 12th century , and later as Torceu . The parish church, mentioned from the 16th century, was initially dedicated to Saint-Hilaire , later to Saint Firmin et Éloy and finally to Saint-Biaise and was assigned to the diocese of Lyon. The area of Torcieu belonged to the Lords of Montferrand, first mentioned in 1223, who built their fortified castle in the hamlet of the same name in today's municipality of Torcieu. The small lordship also owned parts of what is now Arandas and at the beginning was subordinate to the powerful Benedictine abbey of Saint-Rambert . In the 14th century it fell under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Torcieu came to France in 1601.

With 726 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Torcieu is one of the small communities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased somewhat towards the end of the 19th century (it was around 900 people until 1850), the trend was reversed at the end of the 20th century and the population was rising again. The inhabitants are called Torciolans .
Economy and Infrastructure
Some medium-sized companies in the industrial sector are based in Torcieu. There are also a number of small farms and some self-employed farmers. The rest of the working population are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. A few south-facing slope plots are still planted with vines , the wine of which is processed under the geographical designation of origin Coteaux de l'Ain .
Two important traffic axes cross the Cluse des Hôpitaux, the main road connection D1504 (former national road N504 ) between Ambérieu-en-Bugey and the Chambéry area and the Lyon – Genève railway line . In the Torcieu area, the main road bypasses the built-up districts, which are instead accessed from the parallel department road D73. There are train stations in Ambérieu and Saint-Rambert, which are served by the TER Rhône-Alpes . The next motorway ( A42 ) is around eleven kilometers away.
In Torcieu there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
