Champagne-en-Valromey is a French commune in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Hauteville-Lompnes in the Belley arrondissement .

geography

Champagne-en-Valromey is located at 530  m , about 17 kilometers north of the city of Belley and 48 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The village extends in the southeast of Bugey , in a promising location on a plateau inclined to the south in the valley of the Valromey , between the ridges of the Planachat in the west and the Grand Colombier in the east.

The area of ​​the 18.16 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Valromey. The Valromey forms a wide depression between two high Jura ridges . The rivers Séran (which forms the western municipal boundary for long distances) and Arvière (eastern municipal boundary ) are deepened into this depression . The plateau of Champagne rises between the valleys running in north-south direction and is around 550  m on average . It is in turn subdivided by the erosion valleys of various short side streams of the Séran and Arvière. The open, agriculturally used plateau gradually rises to the north. Above Chemillieu, the highest point in Champagne-en-Valromey is reached at 746  m .

history

The municipality of Champagne-en-Valromey was already settled during Roman times, which has been proven by various finds, including the wall foundations of a country house near Ossy.

Champagne is first mentioned in documents in the 11th century. It had been the location of a small priory since the 12th century and formed its own rule, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601. To better distinguish it from other communities of the same name, Champagne was officially renamed Champagne-en-Valromey in 1956. With effect from January 1, 1973, the previously independent municipalities of Passin and Lilignod merged with Champagne-en-Valromey.

Attractions

The parish church of Champagne-en-Valromey was rebuilt from 1872 to 1876. Numerous characteristic houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the old town center. The church of Passin originally goes back to a Romanesque building; The choir and vestibule are designed in Gothic styles. The church of Lilignod also dates from the Gothic period, while the nave was rebuilt in the 17th century. Sights in the hamlet of Poisieu include a medieval fountain, a 12th century Calvaire and a bakery .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Champagne-en-Valromey was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, thanks to its beautiful location, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Artemare , there are further road connections with Belmont-Luthézieu, Sutrieu, Brénaz and Virieu-le-Petit.

In Champagne-en-Valromey there is a state primary school ( école primaire ) with integrated preschool classes .
