Valromey is a valley in the high Bugey that the Seran flows through.

The name allegedly comes from Vallée romaine , but in fact probably from Verromey (Verrumensi (1110), Veromensi (1142), Verrometum (1169)), which undoubtedly comes from Venetonimagus and (even older) from Vernemetonimagos (market of the old sanctuary?) .

Valromey, which like the Bugey became French under Henry IV in 1601 due to the Treaty of Lyon , belongs to the Jura and opens to the south near Artemare . The valley comprises 16 communities in the Ain department : Artemare, Belmont-Luthézieu , Brénaz , Champagne-en-Valromey (main town), Chavornay , Hotonnes , Le Grand-Abergement , Le Petit-Abergement , Lochieu , Lompnieu , Ruffieu , Songieu , Sutrieu , Talissieu , Vieu and Virieu-le-Petit . To the north the valley runs out to the Plateau de Retord .

history

Valromey and the Waadtland (Vaud) were by Count Amadeus VI. conquered by Savoy (1343-1383) on the basis of a treaty with France from 1355, in which the borders between Savoy and the Dauphiné were established. By the Treaty of Lyon Valromey was given to France on January 17, 1601. In this contract between Charles Emanuel I of Savoy and the French King Henry IV , France also got the Bresse , the Bugey and the Pays de Gex . In return, Heinrich renounced the Margraviate of Saluzzo .

The property of Honoré d'Urfés in Senoy , Virieu-le-Grand and Bâgé-le-Châtel thus changed sovereign, he paid homage to his king, and in 1612 - after ten years that he was still regarded as a partisan of Savoy - became margrave of Valromey and Bâgé appointed.
