Bâgé-le-Chatel is a French commune with 923 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes in the department of Ain . It is assigned to the canton of Replonges and the arrondissement of Bourg-en-Bresse .
geography
The place is in the Bresse countryside , around ten kilometers east of Mâcon .
history
The name Bâgé came from a Gallo-Roman country house that belonged to a certain Balgiasius .
In the Middle Ages , three parishes were established under the rule of the Seigneurs de Bâgé : Bâgé-le-Châtel near the castle, Saint-André-de-Bâgé , with a church built by the barons , and Bâgé-la-Ville (since 2018: Bâgé-Dommartin ), in the common people's territory. All of these settlements are now considered to be independent communities.
Bâgé was the capital of the Bresse countryside until 1272, but then came as a dowry to the County of Savoy when the Bâgé family died out in the male line and the sole heiress Sibylle de Bâgé married Amadeus V of Savoy. As a result, Bâgé was unable to hold its own against the new capital, Bourg , 20 km to the east, as this was also fortified and very important with 3,400 inhabitants at that time.
Bâgé-le-Châtel, formerly a market town that attracted numerous visitors from the rural area until the middle of the 20th century, is nowadays often regarded as a satellite town of Mâcon. What has remained is a beautiful, concentric village center of medieval origin with some remains of the city wall and two red brick watchtowers .
