Viriat is a commune with 6418 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Bourg-en-Bresse and the canton of Bourg-en-Bresse-1 . The inhabitants are called Viriatis .
geography
Viriat is one of the largest municipalities in the Bresse . Viriat is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Marboz in the north, Saint-Étienne-du-Bois in the northeast, Jasseron in the east, Bourg-en-Bresse in the south, Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg in the southwest, Polliat in the west and Attignat in the northwest.

During the Middle Ages there was a settlement of the Order of St. John in what was then Viriacus .

Community partnerships
Community partnerships have existed since 1989 with the Romanian community Voineşti in the Vaslui district (Moldova region) and since September 2000 with the Italian community Sorbolo in the Parma province (Emilia-Romagna).
Special for July 14th
Viriat always celebrates the "Quatorze Juillet" in August so as not to disturb the hay harvest. This was laid down in a municipal decree in 1880.
