topography

The area of the 40.36 km 2 municipal area covers part of the southern Bresse, a plain between the Jura mountains and the Saône river , which is particularly characterized by agriculture . It is bounded by the Reyssouze in the west, which at this point meanders northwards in a wide valley that is between 10 and 20 m deep into the landscape. Smaller streams arise in the municipality and drain it to the Reyssouze. Agricultural use makes up the majority of the land cover (fields with around 35%, meadows 24%, other 26%) followed by forests with 11%, which alternate as small wooded areas with the agricultural areas, especially in the east of the municipality.

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center, Foissiat also includes many hamlet settlements and farmsteads spread across the plain , including:

  • Chamandre ( 218  m ) and Grande Belle-Vavre ( 218  m ) in the northeast corner of the municipality,
  • Montclair ( 222  m ) southeast of the village center,
  • Les Orcières ( 210  m ), street village on the D1a to Montrevel-en-Bresse
  • Bass Corcelles and Upper Corcelles (196- 213  m ) at the edge of a seascape in Reyssouze valley.

history

In the High Middle Ages the place first appeared in the Cluny documents in 925 as Fulciacense , to be pronounced Fusciacense . A separate parish was mentioned in 1250 ( Ecclesia de Foissia ), at the same time there was a small lordship in Foissiat as a fief of the Lords of Bâgé . The spelling changed via Foyssiacus (1268), Foisiacus (1335), Foissiac (1563) and finally to Foyssiat (1656). Under the Count of Savoy as sovereigns in the 14th century, the rule came into the possession of the La Baume family , who held it until the French Revolution . With the Treaty of Lyon , the entire Bresse became part of France in 1601.

From 1793 to 2015 Foissiat was part of the canton of Montrevel-en-Bresse .

Attractions

The 19th century village church of Saint Denys et Saint Didier is built in the neo-Gothic style and replaced a previous building, the remains of which are partially integrated into the current building.

Watermills have stood at regular intervals on the Reyssouze since the Middle Ages. Half of the Moulin de la Vavre and Moulin Bruno (t) are in the area of Foissiat . The Ferme du Tiret ( 46 ° 22 ′ 2.3 ″  N , 5 ° 10 ′ 0.1 ″  E ) on the southern edge of the village is a typical Bressehaus with a Saracen fireplace and is classified as a monument historique .
