Thoissey is a French commune with 1,741 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne in the Bourg-en-Bresse arrondissement .

geography

location

Thoissey is located at 174  m , about 33 kilometers west of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse and 46 kilometers north of the city of Lyon and 15 km south of the city of Mâcon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the triangle where the Chalaronne meets the Saône on the western edge of the Ain department. Neighboring municipalities of Thoissey are Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne in the east and Dracé in the Rhône department in the west.

topography

The area of the 1.34 km² municipal area covers a section on the north bank of the Chalaronne and extends as far as its confluence with the Saône, about one kilometer away, the middle of which marks the western municipal boundary and at the same time the border with the Rhône department. The place is on the northern edge of the historic province of Dombes in the southwestern part of the Bresse , a plain in the Bresse-Saône-Graben . The riverside landscape around Thoissey has only slight differences in altitude of a few meters. In the comparatively small area, the proportion of urban development is correspondingly high at 25%. The rest consists of meadows (61%) and water bodies (9%).

history

The early settlement of the Saône Valley can also be traced in Thoissey, where Bronze Age tools and Roman coins were found. In the High Middle Ages , the village was first mentioned in 910–927 as villa Tussiacum . Other Latinized spellings from the 10th century were Tusciacum and Tossicum . The French name was Toissey (1239), Toissay (1441) and finally Thoissey (1567).

Thoissey was first a settlement in the Kingdom of Burgundy under the rule of Rudolf II and came into the possession of the Cluny Abbey in 934 . Three hundred years later, the Abbot Etienne III joined. de Berzé met with the lords of Beaujeu and in 1239 transferred the possession of the city of Thoissey to them. As a result, Thoissey became part of the principality of Dombes and rose to become an important castellany in 1475 .

The chapel in Thoissey ( Capella Beate Marie Magdalene de Thoissiaco ), founded in 1331 , initially belonged to the parish of Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne. In 1691 the chapel was raised to the rank of parish church.

In the administrative structure after the French Revolution , Thoissey was the capital of the canton Thoissey , which was abolished in 2015, and until 1926 belonged to the Arrondissement Trévoux , whose municipalities were assigned to the Arrondissement Bourg-en-Bresse after its dissolution .

In the 19th century the population fluctuated between 1250 and the high of 1748 inhabitants, which was recorded in 1866. After the population decline from the late 19th century continued into the first half of the 20th century, the trend reversed in 1962 and the population began to increase again. The local residents of Thoissey are called Thoisseyen (ne) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

As the original castellany and former canton capital, Thoissey still functions as a center in rural areas. Retail and restaurants in the Grande Rue and the surrounding area make up a large part of the business. Almost 70% of the jobs in Thoissey are in administration, public institutions and health care. In the meantime, the village has also developed into a residential community whose workers as commuters are divided between the greater areas of Bourg-en-Bresse, Villefranche-sur-Saône and Mâcon.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road (D7) that connects the former Route nationale 433 in Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne with Dracé on the other side of the river, on the left side of the Saône . A second Saône crossing exists in the north with the D7a to Romanèche-Thorins . The next motorway connections to the A6 and A40 are south and west of Mâcon, respectively. In Romanèche-Thorins and Belleville there is a stopping point on the Paris-Marseille railway line about 10 km away . The airport in the region is Lyon-St-Exupéry (70 km).
