The municipal administration ( Mairie ) of Frans |
Frans is a French commune with 2,351 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Trévoux in the arrondissement of Bourg-en-Bresse and is a member of the Dombes Saône Vallée municipal association .
geography
location
Frans is located at 200 m , about 42 km southwest of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse , 26 km north-northwest of the city of Lyon and 35 km south of the city of Mâcon (as the crow flies). The village extends on a slope above the Saône opposite the city of Villefranche-sur-Saône . Neighboring communities of Frans are Fareins and Chaleins in the north, Ars-sur-Formans and Misérieux in the east, Saint-Euphemie and Saint-Didier-de-Formans (point of contact) in the south and Jassans-Riottier and Beauregard in the west.
topography
The area of the municipal area of 7.98 km 2 lies in the west of the landscape and historical province of Dombes and includes a slope on which the terrain drops from the plateau of the Dombes by about 80 m into the valley of the Saône. In the area of the municipality, a small watercourse, the Marmont brook, has sunk into the plateau. Its valley floor is occupied by the old town center of Frans and here the community reaches its lowest point at 183 m . In contrast, the newer settlement areas are spread over the promising, south-facing slopes north of the town center. The rest of the parish mark on the plain around the village is used intensively for agriculture, so that fields make up almost 82% of the total area of Frans. In the south-west of the municipality there is a small housing estate that is seamlessly connected to Jassans-Riottier and a small business park, the Zone d'activités du Pardy .
history
The place has existed since the early High Middle Ages at the latest and was first mentioned in 984 as Frents, Lisez Frencs . In the period that followed, the spelling changed again and again: Frais (1177), Frenz (1225), Freyns , (1299–1369), Freins (1331), Freings (1363) up to Frans (from 1567). In Frans there was a small lordship with a motte from the 11th century , which was under the suzerainty of the lords of Villars, later Thoire-Villars. The earliest recorded family members were 1097 Auger and Pierre de Frans. The line became extinct in 1324, so the Lords of Beaujeu bought the property in 1325. In 1402 they obtained feudal rights from the last lord of Thoire-Villars. There are no traces of the medieval manor house, which was located between the present-day districts of Le Bâty and La Jonchère.
From 1898 to 1937 the carriages of the Villefranche – Bourg-en-Bresse regional tram , part of the Tramways de l'Ain , stopped at a station in Frans. The route climbed the plateau of the Dombes over a few small serpentines, today's Chemin du Tacot.
Attractions
The municipality of Frans is inscribed as a monument historique in its entirety . In addition, there are detailed memorial entries for all historical buildings in the center and the surrounding farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as various furnishings and works of art.
The parish church of Saint-Étienne goes back to a previous building from the 12th century, of which elements have been preserved in several places. The two side walls of the nave date from this time and are possibly on even older foundations. In addition, the narrow, arched window openings with bevels on the inside, the yoke in the choir area, the northern side gate and the southern portal have been preserved. Some time ago frescoes from the second half of the 14th century were uncovered in the choir. The current apse with Gothic window arches is the result of an extension from the second half of the 15th century. Much of the interior is from the 17th and 18th centuries. The bell tower, which was destroyed during the French Revolution , was rebuilt in 1861, followed by maintenance work on the entire structure.
