The Autoroute A 6 , also known as the Autoroute du Soleil ('sun motorway'), is a French motorway that connects Paris with Lyon through the Saône valley. It has a length of 447 km. The continuation from Lyon south to Marseille is via the A 7 . The A 6 is part of the European roads  E 15E 21 and  E 60 . The company Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône is responsible for running the route .

history

The motorway at Villabé .
Toll station at Fleury-en-Bière .
Toll booth at Villefranche-Limas .

The A 6 autoroute was built between 1953 and 1971. In 1953 construction began on the first 34 km long section between Paris and Le Coudray-Montceaux , which opened seven years later in 1960. In 1961 the SAPL (abbreviation for Société de l'Autoroute Paris-Lyon ; German company for the Paris-Lyon motorway ) was founded. Construction work on the 25 km long section between Auxerre- Sud and Nitry began in the summer of 1961 and continued until the section was opened in 1963. Use of the motorway was initially free of charge.

In 1964, the section from Nitry to Avallon was opened to traffic. In addition, the toll was introduced for all vehicles on the section between Auxerre and Avallon . The rest of the route between Fleury-en-Bière and Limas also became a toll. A free section was opened between Le Coudray-Montceaux and Ury .

In 1965, the sections between the Auxerre-Nord and Auxerre-Sud junctions and between Ury and Nemours were opened. In the following years, further sections from Arnas -Nord to Arnas-Sud (twelve kilometers) and from Nemours to Auxerre-Nord were completed. From 1967 the motorway connected Paris with Avallon for 210 km without interruption.

In 1969, the sections between Avallon and Pouilly-en-Auxois , between Villefranche-sur-Saône and Mâcon-Nord and between Anse and Limonest were opened. With the handover of the last section between Pouilly-en-Auxois and Mâcon-Nord (1970) and the opening of the Fourviere tunnel , the construction of the A 6 was completed.

In 1972 a motorway slip road between Cachan and Paris-Porte d'Italie was opened as Autoroute A 6b . In 1975 the SAPL was renamed the SAPRR (abbreviation for Société des Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône ; German Society of the Motorways Paris-Rhin-Rhône ). In the years that followed, investments were made to improve road safety. In 1982 the section near Beaune was expanded to 2 × 3 lanes . In 1997, measures to improve safety in the Fourvière tunnel began. In 2006, the speed limit in the Fourvière tunnel was reduced from 90 km / h to 70 km / h. In 2007 the automated toll collection was introduced.

Planning

The plans include the expansion of the section after the A 77 in the direction of Lyon to 2 × 3 lanes . The A 466 was built north of Lyon as a link between the A 6 and the A 46 . This four-kilometer route cost 76 million euros. The opening was planned for the end of 2015 [obsolete] .

The A 6b autoroute leads south from the Porte d'Italie junction on the Boulevard périphérique . Their own length is two kilometers. You can quickly reach the A 6a motorway , which runs from Porte d'Orléans . The two motorways then run parallel to each other for the next few kilometers, but are separated by a median and guard rails. This common course is about seven kilometers. The A 6b ends at an interchange with the A 6a, the A 10 and the A 6.

The motorway slip road was built in the late 1960s to better connect Paris with the suburb of Rungis . After a few years in the 1970s, it was being used by around 100,000 vehicles every day. The result was that the line was equipped with noise barriers on four sections for a total of 825 meters. In 2001 these old noise barriers were removed. By 2012, the entire route had been equipped with new noise barriers worth 120 million euros .
