The Autoroute A 44 was a planned motorway in France , which should lead from Limonest to Vienne . When completed, it was to form a western bypass from Lyon . In the meantime, however, the planning for the project has been discontinued.

Planning history

Planning for a western bypass around Lyon began as early as the 1960s. According to the plans, the approximately 60 km long motorway should branch off from motorway 7 in the south of Vienne , intersect the motorways A47 , A45 , A89 and merge into motorway 6 in the north between Limonest and north of Villefranche-sur-Saône . The number of interchanges should be limited, as the motorway was largely planned for transit traffic. According to estimates, the traffic volume should be around 33,000 vehicles per day, with heavy goods traffic accounting for a share of 21–23%. Until the project was abandoned, no decision was made about mandatory tolls.
