The French Autoroute A 40 is a mountain highway that connects the Mont Blanc near Saint-Gervais-les-Bains via Geneva and Bellegarde with Mâcon from east to west and connects there to the A 6 . The first section of today's A 40 was opened in 1973, and the entire 205-kilometer stretch has been drivable since 1990.

The motorway is operationally divided into two sections, which are managed by different operating companies:

  • The Autoroute Blanche is operated by the Autoroutes et Tunnel du Mont Blanc (ATMB) company and includes the Geneva - Chamonix (on Mont Blanc) and Geneva - Châtillon-de-Michaille (near Bellegarde) routes.
  • The Autoroutes des Titans is operated by the Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône (APRR) company and covers the Mâcon - Bellegarde route.

Tolls are levied on both sections .

Motorway intersection between A 40 and A 42

Functionally, the A 40 also includes the A 411 (Etrembières - Genève-Vallard) motorway branch in the ATMB area, the N 205 between Le Fayet and the Mont-Blanc tunnel, and the Mont-Blanc tunnel itself. The APRR area includes the motorway branch A 404 in addition.

Chamonix - Bellegarde route (Autoroute Blanche)

The Route Blanche is the route leading to Mont Blanc in the Haute-Savoie; the term was adopted in a slightly modified form as Autoroute Blanche at the end of the 1960s when the Geneva - Chamonix motorway was planned .

The decision to build the Autoroute Blanche was made in 1968, and construction began in 1971 near Bonneville. From 1973 onwards, sections were opened annually from the Swiss border in the direction of Mont Blanc. With the fourth section in 1976, the Autoroute Blanche between Geneva and Chamonix was completed in its current form.

Opening of the sections:

  • 1973: (Customs) Vallard - Bonneville
  • 1974: Bonneville - Cluses
  • 1975: Cluses - Sallanches
  • 1976: Sallanches - Le Fayet
  • 1982: Etrembières - Châtillon-en-Michaille
  • 1991: A 40 - (inch) Bardonnex

The motorway was developed in coordination with the canton and city of Geneva, which together hold around 5.4% of ATMB. With the opening of the first section in 1973, the Route Blanche was opened on the Swiss side , a cantonal motorway that begins in Chêne-Bourg as an extension of the Geneva axis H111 and after a few hundred meters in Thônex reaches the common customs platform of the Thônex-Vallard motorway toll, where it flows into the Autoroute Blanche .

The Autoroute Blanche , opened as the B40, reached Le Fayet in 1976, where it has since ended and merges into the N 205, which leads to Chamonix and on to the west portal of the Mont Blanc tunnel .

As part of its concession, ATMB constructed in a second phase the 50-kilometer section from Annemasse , south of the canton of Geneva towards Bellegarde . When it opened in 1982, the two-kilometer section between the Swiss border and the new motorway triangle at Étrembières was given the new number A411. The new, western end of the motorway at Châtillon was provisionally linked to the N 84 , where the concession boundary is still located today - the Continuation of the A 40 west towards Lyon is managed by the APRR.

Connections to Switzerland and Annecy

The A 40 is directly connected to the Swiss road network at two points. At the Etrembières motorway triangle , the branch numbered A 411 merges into the Geneva Malagnou route (which is not subject to a toll). At the Saint-Julien motorway junction south of Geneva, a two-kilometer section of the A 41 leads to the Bardonnex motorway toll , where the A 41 merges into the Swiss A1 motorway , which requires a vignette . This section was opened in 1991, so that from 1993 the western bypass of Geneva was complete. The twelve-kilometer section of the A 40 between Etrembières and Saint-Julien thus functions as an eastern motorway ring around Geneva and is toll-free. There is a connection to Annecy or Chambery and Grenoble both via the A 410, which branches off east of Mont Salève in the direction of Annecy, and via the A 41, which creates a direct connection between Geneva and Annecy from the Saint-Julien junction. The section of the A 41 between Allonzier and Saint-Julien was only completed in 2008, before that time the Saint-Julien motorway junction had only been expanded on one side for 17 years, and the official road layout between Geneva and Annecy was via today's A 410 between Scientrier and Allonzier which meant a detour.

Bellegarde - Mâcon route (Autoroute des Titans)

The continuation of the A 40 in the direction of Lyon or Mâcon was opened in four sections from 1985, which are managed by the APRR. The gap was closed in 1989 with the fourth section to Châtillon-en-Michaille , since then the A 40 has been continuously passable from Mâcon to Le Fayet.

Opening of the sections:

  • 1985: Bourg-en-Bresse Nord - Bourg-en-Bresse Sud (20 km)
  • 1986: Bourg-en-Bresse Sud - Sylans (Nantua) (61 km, single-lane in the Chamoise tunnel and Nantua viaduct) ||
  • 1987: Mâcon - Bourg-en-Bresse Nord (27 km)
  • 1989: Sylans - Châtillon-en-Michaille
  • 1990: Connection between A 6 and A 40 (Mâcon) over 3 km
  • 1995: Two-lane expansion of the Chamoise Tunnel as well as the Nantua Viaduct and Neyrolles Viaduct
  • 1997: A 40 - Oyonnax (A 404) |

Since it opened, the A 40 has been the most important link between Lyon, western Switzerland and northern Italy. The extremely high volume of traffic on this route often leads to traffic collapse during the holiday season - especially in the summer months.

Autoroute A 404

The most recent expansion in the area of APRR includes the 18-kilometer-long A 404 motorway, opened in 1997, between the A 40 at Saint-Martin-du-Fresne and the village of Oyonnax . The junction of the A 404 from the A 40 happens at the Saint-Martin-du-Fresne exit (no. 8), from where it goes north to Oyonnax. The junctions 10 to 12 and the following end of the motorway, where the motorway turns into the D 31 at a roundabout, serve as a bypass for Oyonnax and are toll-free.

Buildings

A 40 with the viaduct of Nantua

The A40 crosses the folded mountains of the French Jura in the Cluse de Nantua valley , whereby even significant geographical obstacles were so ignored that the motorway was nicknamed the Autoroute des Titans . It has an exceptionally high proportion of route structures, all of which are located in the Jura Mountains:

In terms of execution, separate means that an independent tunnel or bridge structure has been implemented for each direction of travel. In some cases this allowed the motorway to be opened up in stages, i.e. H. an early implementation as single-lane traffic routing with oncoming traffic over a structure, while the structure for the second lane was still under construction. These cases can be recognized by the different opening years.

In two cases, a tunnel structure is so directly connected to a viaduct that the tunnel takes on the function of the bridge abutment for the adjacent viaduct. This concerns the tunnels and viaducts of Nantua and Châtillon.
