Scionzier is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Cluses in the arrondissement of Bonneville .
geography
Scionzier is located at around 504 m , to the west of Cluses , around 35 kilometers south-east of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on the southern edge of the broad Arve valley on both sides of the Foron du Reposoir river , in the Savoy Alps at the northern foot of the Chaîne du Bargy (part of the Bornes Alps ), in Faucigny .
The area of the 10.62 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Arve valley. The northern border runs in the area of the Arve valley floodplain, which flows from east to west in a broad valley low here. From the floodplain, the municipal area extends southward over the alluvial plain and the alluvial cone of the Foron du Reposoir , which emerges from a gorge-like valley in the Bornes Alps near Scionzier . The communal soil extends over a steep forest slope to the limestone peaks of the Pointe de Nancy ( 1191 m ) and to the eastern roof of the Chaîne du Bargy. On the crest of this mountain range, the highest point of Scionzier is reached at 1969 m .
Scionzier includes the hamlets of Miosinge ( 500 m ) on the southern edge of the Arve plain and Neyrolles ( 720 m ) on a protrusion at the entrance to the Reposoir valley. Neighboring municipalities of Scionzier are Thyez in the north, Cluses and Nancy-sur-Cluses in the east, Le Reposoir in the south and Marnaz in the west.
history
Scionzier is first mentioned in a document in the 14th century. As early as the 18th century, Scionzier developed into an industrial community with numerous sawmills , mills and chocolate factories , which obtained their energy from the abundant hydropower of the Foron du Reposoir and the Arve. In 1866, with the separation of Marnaz, an important change in area was made for the municipality of Scionzier. The place has been fully supplied with electricity since 1906 .
Attractions
The village church of Scionzier dates from the 19th century. The Notre-Dame-des-Grâces chapel , the Château de la Croix and the ruins of the Château de Mussel should also be mentioned.
