Mieussy is located at 636  m , northwest of Cluses , about 30 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends in a basin of the Giffre , in the Savoy Alps at the foot of the Pointe de Marcelly, in Faucigny .

The area of the 44.45 km² municipal area covers a section of the Savoy Alps. The Mieussy basin forms the main settlement area. It is traversed from east to west by the Giffre, which has a flat valley floor about 1 to 2 km wide. To the south of this valley, the municipal area extends to the ridge of Mont Orchez (up to 1049  m ), which separates the Giffre from the Arve valley. The north-western part of the municipality is characterized by the open slopes exposed to the south and south-west in the area of the Risse valley and the Mieussy brook. To the north, the municipality extends along the Foron river into the Sommant ski region at Col de la Ramaz in the Chablais Alps. The peaks of this region include the Haute Pointe ( 1958  m ), the Pointe de Chavasse (at 2010  m the highest point in Mieussy), the Pointe du Haut Fleuri ( 1981  m ) and the Pointe de Marcelly ( 2000  m ).

history

The municipality of Mieussy was already settled during the Neolithic and Roman times, which has been proven by various finds. The Roman colony Miocircum , from which today's place name developed, was located near Mieussy . Mieussy was already the center of a parish in the 12th century.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Gervais was built in the Gothic Flamboyant style. There are chapels in the villages of Ley, Saint-Denis and Quincy as well as at Saint-Gras. There has also been a chapel at the Grotte du Jourdy above Mieussy since 1881. The old town centers are characterized by houses in the typical Savoyard style.

With 2340 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Mieussy is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 20th century, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1901 there were still 1949 inhabitants in Mieussy). However, since the mid-1980s, thanks to the beautiful residential area, there has been a significant increase in population again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Mieussy was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry until well into the 20th century . Today there are various small business enterprises. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. In recent decades, the arena on the high plateau near Sommant has developed into a tourist destination together with the neighboring Le Praz-de-Lys (municipality of Taninges), which has resulted in a significant economic boom in the municipality. Mieussy specializes in both summer tourism and winter tourism (mountain railways and ski lifts).

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road D907, which leads from Annemasse to Taninges. Other road connections exist with Mégevette and Le Praz-de-Lys.
