history
The municipality of Contamine-sur-Arve was settled in Roman times.
The first written mention of the place took place in 1119 under the name Condominium (meaning jointly administered property ). The village developed next to the Cluniac priory of Sainte-Marie, founded in 1083. In the Middle Ages , Contamine-sur-Arve was part of the Faucigny domain. As part of the Dauphiné, the place came to France in 1349, but was given to the Counts of Savoy in an exchange of countries in the Treaty of Paris in 1355 . Thereafter, Contamine-sur-Arve shared the fate of Savoy . The priory was devastated by the Geneva and their allies during the Savoy War in 1589.
Attractions
The current parish church and former priory church of Sainte-Foy is an important sight. It served as the burial place of the Lords of Faucigny. The church received its present form when it was rebuilt in 1295; Later, several conversions and restorations were made. Most of the convent buildings date from the 17th century and are now home to the Lycée Professionnel Agricole.
On a terrace on the slope above Contamine-sur-Arve, the Château de Villy stands on the site of a castle built in the 11th century by the Lords of Faucigny. The castle, which dates from the 16th century, was later rebuilt and only got its current appearance at the end of the 19th century. It has a mighty square tower.
