Marignier is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Marignier is located at 473  m , about halfway between Bonneville and Cluses , around 30 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on the northern edge of the broad Arve valley, on both sides of the Giffre river , in the Savoy Alps at the eastern foot of Le Môle , in Faucigny .

The area of the 19.97 km² municipal area includes a section of the central Arve valley. The southern border runs along the Arve, which flows here in a wide valley from east to west. From the course of the river, the community area extends northwards over the flat floodplain and the alluvial plain of the Giffre, which flows into the Arve here. The northern part of the municipality has a strong relief. It occupies the lowest part of the Giffre valley, which is flanked in the east by the height of Mont Orchez (up to 1000  m ) and in the west by the solitary mountain of the Môle. Near the grassy summit of the Môle, the highest point of Marignier is reached at 1840  m .

In addition to the actual town center, Marignier includes various villages and hamlet settlements, including:

  • Anterne ( 465  m ) in the middle of the Arve valley
  • Le Vieux Pont ( 500  m ) on an old bridge over the Giffre
  • Les Chéney ( 650  m ) on the southern slope of the Môle
  • L'Eponnet ( 750  m ) on the southern slope of the Môle
  • Ossat ( 625  m ) on a terrace on the lower eastern slope of the Môle
  • La Combe ( 620  m ) on a terrace on the lower eastern slope of the Môle
  • Le Pont du Giffre ( 508  m ) at the mouth of the Risse in the Giffre

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Marignier was predominantly an agricultural village. Viticulture is practiced on the sun-exposed southern slopes in the vicinity of the village . Marignier is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .

Today there are numerous small and medium-sized businesses here. A commercial and industrial zone has developed in the plain south of the old village. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It lies at the cross of two departmental roads that lead from Bonneville to Cluses and from Vougy to Saint-Jeoire, respectively. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 8 km away. Marignier has a train station on the La Roche-sur-Foron – Saint-Gervais line .
