Vougy is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Vougy is located at around 465  m , halfway between Bonneville and Cluses , around 30 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on the southern edge of the wide Arve valley in the area of the confluence of the Giffre in the Arve, in the Savoy Alps at the north foot of the heights of Mont-Saxonnex, in Faucigny .

The area of the 3.99 km² large municipal area covers a section of the central Arve valley. The northern border runs along the Arve, which flows here in a broad valley from east to west. From the course of the river, the community area extends southwards over the flat valley floodplain to the adjacent, densely wooded steep slope. Below Mont-Saxonnex, the highest point of Vougy is reached at around 800  m .

Neighboring communities of Vougy are Ayse , Marignier and Thyez in the north, Marnaz in the east, Mont-Saxonnex in the south and Bonneville in the west.

history

Vougy is first mentioned in the early 15th century. The origin of the place name is unclear; some sources derive the name from the Gallic word uoceton (under the forest), others from the Roman personal name Valgius . The politically independent municipality of Vougy was only formed in 1803 from parts of the parish of Saint-Hippolyte.

Outside the old town center, numerous single and multi-family houses as well as commercial zones were created.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vougy was predominantly an agricultural village. Today there are numerous small and medium-sized businesses. A large commercial and industrial zone has developed to the west of the village. Metal construction and construction companies, suppliers for the watchmaking industry (décolletage) and furniture factories have settled here. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N205, which leads from Annemasse to Cluses. Another road connection exists with Marignier. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around six km away.
