Demi-Quartier is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Demi-Quartier is located at 1054  m , northeast of Megève , about 55 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends in a short left side valley of the Arve on the ascent to Megève, in the Savoy Alps at the foot of Mont d'Arbois.

The area of the 8.90 km² municipal area covers a section of the Savoy Alps. The main settlement area is in the open valley of Megève, which is oriented from southwest to northeast and is drained to the Arve. The valley basin is flanked on both sides by gently sloping slopes, which (if not built up) are partly covered with meadows and partly with forest. To the west, the municipal area extends to the height of Croix des Salles (up to 1700  m ), to the east to the slopes of Mont d'Arbois , where the highest elevation of Demi-Quartier is reached at 1780  m .

Demi-Quartier, which has no actual town center, includes various hamlets and holiday settlements as well as individual farms, including:

  • Vauvray ( 1180  m ) on the eastern slope of Croix des Salles
  • Petit Bois ( 1100  m ) at the foot of Mont d'Arbois
  • Les Choseaux ( 1215  m ) on the western slope of Mont d'Arbois
  • part of Ormaret ( 1125  m ) on the eastern slope of the Croix des Salles

Neighboring communities of Demi-Quartier are Combloux in the north, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains in the east and Megève in the south.

With 909 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Demi-Quartier is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the beginning of the 1970s, thanks to the attractive residential area, there has been a significant increase in population. Today, the Demi-Quartier settlement area has merged with that of Megève.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Demi-Quartier was predominantly an agricultural village. Today there are various small business enterprises. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Sallanches and Cluses. In the last few decades Demi-Quartier has developed into a holiday resort thanks to its proximity to Megève.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N212, which leads from Sallanches via Megève to Albertville . Another road connection is with Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around eleven km away.
