Praz-sur-Arly is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Praz-sur-Arly is located at 1036 m , southwest of Megève , about 52 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on the upper Arly in a wide valley basin in the Savoy Alps between the Chaîne des Aravis in the northwest and the chain of Mont Joly in the southeast.
The area of the 22.64 km² municipal area covers a section of the Savoy Alps. The main settlement area is in the open valley of Megève, which is oriented from southwest to northeast and is drained by the Arly to Isère . The valley floor at Praz-sur-Arly is around 1 km wide. On both sides of the valley basin, the slopes are subdivided by short erosion valleys . To the north, the community area extends over wooded slopes to the alpine pastures of Tête du Torraz ( 1931 m ) and Christomet ( 1853 m ). In the south, the area extends along the Ruisseau des Varins and the Ruisseau de Cassio to the Mont de Vorès ( 2067 m ) and on the west ridge of the Aiguille Croche reaches the highest point of Praz-sur-Arly at 2282 m .
Praz-sur-Arly includes the hamlet of La Tonnaz ( 1160 m ) on the northern slope of the Arly valley as well as various holiday settlements and farms. Neighboring municipalities of Praz-sur-Arly are La Giettaz in the north, Megève in the east, Hauteluce in the south and Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe and Flumet in the west.
history
The oldest town in the Praz-sur-Arly area is La Tonnaz, mentioned as early as 1375 under the name Thona . Only later did the village of Praz, previously written as Pratz , develop on the road over the Megève pass . Until 1869, Praz belonged politically to the municipality of Megève, only then was it raised to an independent municipality, which initially bore the name Praz-de-Megève . In 1907, the municipality was renamed Praz-sur-Arly by decree in order to better emphasize its independence from Megève.
Attractions
The village church of Praz-sur-Arly was built in 1881 in neo -Gothic style and extensively restored from 1950 to 1955.
The hamlet of La Tonnaz is characterized by a group of traditional farmhouses and a 17th century bakery .

With 1,228 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Praz-sur-Arly is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the early 1960s, thanks to the attractive residential area, there has been a significant increase in population. Various single-family housing estates were built near the main road and on the slopes.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Praz-sur-Arly was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various small business enterprises. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. In the last few decades, Praz-sur-Arly has become an important tourist resort thanks to its proximity to Megève. The municipality specializes in both summer tourism and winter tourism (various mountain railways and ski lifts).
The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N212, which leads from Sallanches via Megève to Albertville . The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 20 km away.
