Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe is a French municipality with 479 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Ugine in the arrondissement of Albertville .

geography

The small mountain village is located in the western Alps in the valley of the Arly river , about 53 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva and 52 kilometers northeast of the associated prefecture of Chambéry (both as the crow flies). It is located at around 1150  m on a shoulder of the Mont Reguet mountain , a 1520  m high mountain on the edge of the Massif du Beaufortain . The municipality borders on a length of about 2 kilometers directly on the Arly, where it has its lowest point at the mouth of the Nant Rouge with 839  m . From there it extends south-east into the Massif du Beaufortain and includes the 1767  m high Mont Rond and its surrounding valleys. The eastern border runs on a ridge consisting of Crêt du Midi ( 1890  m ), Ban Rouge ( 1983  m ) and Mont de Vorès ( 2067  m ).

Several hamlets and settlements also belong to the municipality:

  • les Biolles ( 1130  m ), new housing estate on the northern edge of the village center,
  • Chelou ( 1250  m ), hamlet on the D218b to the Col des Saisies ,
  • les Favrays ( 1300  m ), hamlet on the D218b to the Col des Saisies,
  • le Planay ( 1310  m ), hamlet on the D218b to Col des Saisies and second valley station in the ski area of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe,
  • le Crêt ( 1350  m ) between le Planay and the mountain Crêt du Midi ,
  • le Plan Désert ( 1491  m ), in a basin of the Nant du Milieu and third valley station in the ski area of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe,
  • les Frasses ( 1458  m ), hamlet on the D218b to the Col des Saisies.

The neighboring municipalities are (starting from the north clockwise) Flumet , Praz-sur-Arly (in the neighboring Haute-Savoie department ), Hauteluce , Crest-Voland and Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle . The capital of the Canton of Ugine is around 18 kilometers away.

population

With 479 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe is one of the small communities of Savoy. Alpine tourism, which began in the second half of the 20th century, reversed the declining trend in the number of inhabitants, but the growth in recent decades has been slow enough to maintain the character of a mountain village. The locals of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe are called Bellecombais (es) in French .

history

The parish church in Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe.

The place name describes the place of a Marian veneration through a geographical addition, which is composed of the words belle and combe and means something like beautiful valley . Even in today's French, the word combe specifies a valley as an erosion valley . Similar to the neighboring communities, some of the hamlets in Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe emerged in the High Middle Ages , such as Les Frasses, first mentioned in 1195 . The community later shared the history of Savoy and was incorporated into the Canton of Ugine in 1860. Today's parish church was built between 1876 and 1886 in place of its predecessor from the 14th century.

Its function as a tourist resort began in the winter of 1937/38 with a toboggan cable car that ran from the main town of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe halfway up to Mont Reguet . It was replaced in 1948 by a pole ski lift , but the expansion into a ski resort with several valley stations in the municipality did not take place until the 1970s. The last extension was the connection to the neighboring area Les Saisies via the Télésiège du Lac chairlift in 2000 , so that Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe assumed a central position in the Espace Diamant winter sports area, which was founded in 2005 .

The location on the Route des Grandes Alpes also made the place attractive for cycling, as the 2010 Tour de France passed through the place.

Economy and Infrastructure

With two hotels and a share of second homes and holiday homes of 86% (as of 2009), the economy in Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe is primarily geared towards tourism. Although agriculture continues to dominate the townscape, especially in summer, the number of farms is in the regional average. Regional cheeses are produced as an essential product of agriculture, namely Reblochon and Beaufort , whose protected designations of origin overlap in the Arly valley.

traffic

The upper Arly Valley is off the main regional arteries and railway lines. The D1212 (originally national road 212) runs through the valley and below the village and connects the Arve valley to the north via Megève with the Isère valley and Albertville in the south. Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe is linked to this thoroughfare by the D218b. The D218b then circles Mont Rond and leaves the municipality shortly before the Col des Saisies pass . This road also forms part of the approximately 700-kilometer Route des Grandes Alpes , which is particularly popular with tourists and cyclists. From here the D71b branches off in the village center and connects Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe with the neighboring town of Crest-Voland .

The nearest possible motorway connections are the A430 (Albertville exit, 27 km away) and the A40 (exits 20 to 22, around 25 km away). The Albertville SNCF train station is suitable for reaching Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe by bus. Airports in the region are Geneva (77 km), Chambéry-Savoie (86 km) and Lyon-St-Exupéry (160 km).

education

In Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).

Winter sports area

Center of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe.

The winter sports area of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe is divided into several parts. Above the village center, cable cars and ski slopes open up the northern slope of Mont Reguet . The parallel slopes above Flumet and Praz-sur-Arly are accessible from there. There is also a piste and lift connection to the next higher row of peaks, which extends between Mont Rond and Mont de Vorès and on the north side of which there are several slopes. The altitude between 1150 m and 2069 m give the ski area a rural character, as the slopes lead through forests, mountain meadows and past mountain huts. Some of the slopes are equipped with snow cannons . The slopes of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe are a central part of the Espace Diamant ski area .
