Crest-Voland is a French municipality with 341 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Ugine in the arrondissement of Albertville .

geography

The village of Crest-Voland is located at around 1200  m on the western slope of Mont Lachat on a ledge above the steep gorge that narrows the central valley of the Arly . The 9.96 km 2 municipal area extends from the river bed of the Arly eastwards to the Col des Saisies and is bordered to the north and east by the Nant Rouge , a mountain stream that also flows in a steep gorge and flows into the Arly from the left. With the exception of the mountain meadows and ski slopes above the village, the municipality is largely forested.

The neighboring municipalities are (clockwise from the north) Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe , Hauteluce , Cohennoz , Ugine and Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle . The municipality also includes the district of Le Crest , the Moneret settlement and several farms along the D71a to the Col des Saisies :

  • Le Sauzier
  • Paravy
  • Les Reys
  • Manner
  • Le passage
  • les Molliettes

population

With 341 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Crest-Voland is one of the small communities of Savoy. Alpine tourism, which began in the second half of the 20th century, reversed the declining trend in the number of inhabitants, but the growth in recent decades has been slow enough to maintain the character of a mountain village. The local residents of Crest-Voland are called Crest-Volantain (e) s in French .

history

The name of the village is a combination of the word Crest, which still exists today in the meaning of Crête (mountain ridge), and the family name Voland . In the Middle Ages, Crest-Voland belonged to Flumet and was thus part of the Faucigny . The competent parish was that of Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle. The cumbersome road connection to Saint-Nicolas through the Arly gorge encouraged the residents to call for their own parish church, which was started immediately after permission was granted in 1570 and completed in 1575. Crest-Voland achieved independence as a political municipality in 1640. It then divided the history of Savoy.

The winter sports began in Crest-Voland with the construction of the first surface lift in 1951. Together with the neighboring municipality of Cohennoz was set up a center of winter sports, which the Mont Lachat opens multiple pages and offers around 35 kilometers of slopes. It has been integrated into the Espace Diamant ski area since 2005 .

Economy and Infrastructure

With three hotels and a share of second and holiday homes of around 80%, the economy in Crest-Voland is primarily geared towards tourism. Agricultural businesses, on the other hand, are below average.

traffic

The central Arly Valley is located off the main regional arteries and railway lines. The D1212 (originally national road 212) runs through the valley and below the village, connecting the Arve valley via Megève in the north with the Isère valley and Albertville in the south. Crest-Voland is connected to this thoroughfare via the D71a. In the further course the D71a circles the Mont Lachat and leads to the Pass Col des Saisies . Parallel to the slope there is another road connection to the neighboring villages of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe and Cohennoz , the D71b.

The nearest possible motorway connections are the A430 (Albertville exit, 26 km away) and the A40 (exits 20 to 22, around 29 km away). The Albertville SNCF train station, about 25 kilometers away, is suitable for reaching Crest-Voland by bus. Airports in the region are Geneva (90 km), Chambéry (84 km) and Lyon-St-Exupéry (160 km).

education

In Crest-Voland there is a state École élémentaire and a private École primaire (École élémentaire with affiliated kindergarten) Sainte-Jeanne de Chantal .
