history

The place was first mentioned in 1170 as de Marthodo , this name is derived from a Germanic proper name. The first church building, of which the portal still exists and is inscribed as a monument ( monument historique ) , also dates from this time . Later in the Middle Ages, the place appeared as Petrus de Marthodo (1286), Prioratus de Martou (1317) and Supra Marthoudum (1358). In the Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime, Marthod was a small rulership with changing owners who were under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy and thus shared the history of Savoy . The settlement was built on a slope so as not to be exposed to the risk of frequent flooding of the valley floor by the mountain river Arly.

Culture and sights

In addition to the parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste with its medieval portal, there is also an industrial monument in Marthod: the Taillanderie Busillet , a tool forge from 1835. Mainly forestry equipment and horse harnesses were manufactured here, a sawmill was also connected. The forge was operated with water power until the Second World War and ceased operations in 1987. Since then, it has been preserved in its original state and is accessible to visitors.

As part of the Barrière de fer , i.e. the re - fortification of the French borders after the Franco-Prussian War , two weir systems were built high above the Arly Valley in Marthod in 1874, the Fort de la Batterie ( Lage , 1444  m ) and the Fort de l 'Estal ( location , 790  m ). They are no longer used for military purposes today, and the former can be visited.

Economy and Infrastructure

Marthod is still today a predominantly agricultural and forestry village. Regional cheeses are produced as an essential product of agriculture, namely Reblochon and Beaufort , whose protected designations of origin overlap in the Arly valley. There are also some local small businesses and one medium-sized company in the construction industry. However, the majority of those in employment are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

traffic

The D1212 expressway between Ugine and Albertville and a railway line that the metal industry in Ugine uses to transport goods run in the valley floor . A side road, D129, flanking the expressway, enables access to the various parts of the village on the slope at several points. About 9 km away, the city of Albertville offers both a motorway connection to the A430 and a SNCF train station with TGV connections. The airports in the region are Geneva (90 km), Chambéry-Savoie (70 km) and Lyon-St-Exupéry (150 km).

education

There is a state Ecole Primaire in Marthod .
