Venthon is a French municipality with 621 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Ugine in the arrondissement of Albertville .
geography
location
Venthon is located at 520 m , about 3 km north of Albertville, 41 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 61 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on a valley flank on the left bank of the Arly . Venthon's neighboring parishes are Césarches in the north, Queige in the northeast, Albertville in the south and Pallud in the west.
topography
The municipality of Venthon has an area of 2.50 km² and belongs to the Beaufortain , a mountain range to the south-west of the Mont Blanc group . It comprises a single, northwest-facing slope on the flank of the 2041 m high mountain La Roche Pourrie and reaches its highest point on this flank at 1382 m . At its foot lies the mouth of the Doron and the Arly. The two rivers form the municipal boundary at 1200 m and 800 m respectively and drain the municipality. The latter is 73% overgrown with trees and 24.5% built on. The settlement area is limited to a fertile and mostly flat valley shoulder about 100 m above the two rivers, which at this point form narrow gorges inaccessible from Venthon.
history
From the Middle Ages, a parish existed in Venthon, which was first mentioned in 1170 and 1226 as Ecclesia de Venthone . At the same time, the name Ventzon appeared in 1184 . The parish also included the neighboring village of Césarches, which was only raised to an independent parish in 1789 after a dispute that had lasted for centuries.
During the industrialization a small power plant was built at the mouth of the Doron in 1889, which still exists today in a modernized form together with a substation and belongs to the EDF . With the power station, a small industrial area was created on an open space between the Arly and the steep slope of Venthon at the beginning of the 20th century. Below that was an electrochemical factory for the production of aluminum. The remains of the industrial facilities were demolished in 1994-2003.
Attractions
The current village church of Saint-Christophe von Venthon replaced a previous medieval building and was consecrated in 1728.

With 621 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Venthon is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population had been stable at just under 300 during the 19th and 20th centuries, the population began to rise sharply in the 1950s. This is due to the urbanization of Albertville, which Venthon grew into a settlement of mostly single-family houses. The locals of Venthon are called Venthonais (es) in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
Venthon was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Albertville area .
The D925 départemental road runs through the village and from Albertville it gives access to the Beaufortain villages. In Albertville there are connections to the regional infrastructure in the Isère Valley, namely to the A430 motorway and the Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway line . Chambéry-Savoie (distance 65 km) and Geneva (95 km) are possible airports in the region .
There is a primary school ( école primaire ) in Venthon .
Parish partnership
Venthon has had a parish partnership with Gouesnach in Brittany since 1994 .
