Thénésol is a French municipality with 310 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Ugine in the arrondissement of Albertville .

geography

location

Thénésol is located at 520  m in the eastern foothills of the Bauges , a pre-Alpine limestone massif, about 5 kilometers north of Albertville , 41 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 57 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). Neighboring communities of Thénésol are Marthod in the north, Césarches in the east, Pallud in the south and Allondaz and Mercury in the west.

topography

The area of the 5.49 km² municipal area includes an approximately 1.5 km long section on the lower reaches of the Arly , a tributary of the Isère . From the flat valley floor, the communal soil rises to the west and forms a flank of the 2062  m high Dent de Cons , the easternmost elevation of the Bauges massif. The community reaches its highest elevation at 1,800  m on one of the cliffs in front of the Dent de Cons . In the north, the municipal boundary follows the Ruisseau du Creux mountain stream , which, together with other gullies, drains the slope towards the Arly. In the south, the sloping terrain from the Dent de Cons rises again slightly to the Forêt du Tal , a wooded hilltop north of Albertville, where it forms the small Col du Vorger pass between the Arly Valley and the Isère near Mercury. The municipality is located within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges ( French Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ). The area of the municipality is mainly covered with forest with 56.5%, followed by meadows and other agricultural areas (37.4%) and by rock formations (5.3%).

Community structure

The main settlement area of Thénésol extends along the ramp to the Col du Vorger and includes the hamlets of L'Epignier ( 380  m ), Les Combérends ( 445  m ) and Les Cheseaux ( 600  m ). To the north of this are a number of other hamlets and farms scattered across the valley flank, including Saint-Jacob with a chapel from the Middle Ages.

history

A stone with a funerary inscription from Gallo-Roman times was found in the vicinity of the Saint-Jacob chapel , which is now walled up in the wall of the chapel. The parish of Thénésol was first mentioned in the 14th century as Ecclesia de Tenoysso . From the 15th century there was a small lordship that changed hands several times, but was dependent on the Baronnie Chevron (now Mercury) and under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy .

Attractions

The chapel in Saint-Jacob, also called Saint-Jaquemoz in the local dialect , dates from the 14th century and was the parish church of the municipality until 1875. Two painted wooden statues from the 15th century are the oldest pieces of their interior and are in a museum in Albertville. Today's village church is a new building in the neo-Gothic style, completed in 1875 .

With 310 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Thénésol is one of the very small communities in the Savoie department. In the 19th and 20th centuries the community experienced a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants (in 1861 there were still 331 inhabitants), which only stopped in the middle of the 20th century and turned into a slight increase. The local residents of Thénésol are called Thénésolain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Thénésol is still a predominantly agricultural village today . In the meantime the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, particularly in Albertville and Ugine .

The village is located above the through road D1212 (former Route nationale 212 ), which connects Albertville with the larger cities in the Haute-Savoie department . The four-lane road here runs on the eastern edge of the municipality and has junctions in the neighboring municipalities, from which traffic is directed to Thénésol via a parallel department road . The D63 branches off the parallel road and leads through the settlement area of Thénésol and over the Col du Vorger to Allondaz. The nearest motorway connection to the A430 and a train station on the Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway line are in neighboring Albertville . Chambéry-Savoie (distance 69 km) and Geneva (90 km) are possible airports in the region .
