Allondaz is a French municipality with 275 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Albertville-1 in the Albertville arrondissement .

geography

location

Allondaz is located at 720  m in the eastern foothills of the Bauges , a pre-Alpine limestone massif, about 38 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 58 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). Neighboring communities of Allondaz are Thénésol in the north and east, Pallud in the southeast and Mercury in the south and west.

topography

The community is located on the southeast slope of the Dent de Cons , a 2062  m high peak in the Bauges. The area of the 4.08 km² municipal area includes both a steeper section interspersed with rock walls and the gently sloping flanks of a small pass connection (Col du Vorger) between Thénésol in the Arly valley and Mercury in the Isère valley . Various small mountain streams drain the municipality to both rivers, of which the Chiriac forms the western municipal boundary. The municipality is located within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges ( French Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ). 58% of the communal soil is overgrown with forest, another 39% are agricultural meadows and 3% are rocks and debris cones.

The community consists of three settlement parts and hamlets : the main town, Le Vorger , also located at 720  m on the pass, and the hamlet of Mérier ( 800  m ).

history

In the Middle Ages, the parish of Allondaz first appeared in the documents in 1216, probably under the name Ecclesia Allundia . A few decades later, in the middle of the 13th century, a certain Jacobus de Allunda was mentioned several times. It is assumed that the village was founded in the Burgundian period against the background that at that time the arable land was to be found on the mountain foothills and not on the marshy valley floors of the Isère and Arly rivers, which were still free from human interference. The place name is traced back to Adalhund , a Germanic proper name, and its Latinized version Allundus . The lands of Allondaz belonged to the Baronnie Chevron (now Mercury) in the Middle Ages and Ancien Régime .

Attractions

The village church of Saint Michel von Allondaz was completed in 1855 and replaced a dilapidated predecessor from the Middle Ages, whose bell tower had already been demolished during the French Revolution . She has an altarpiece from the 17th century. In Mérier there is a chapel, which was built in 1862 after a village fire.

With 275 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Allondaz is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. In the 19th and 20th centuries the community experienced a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants (351 inhabitants were counted in 1861), which only stopped in the middle of the 20th century and then reversed into a slight increase. The local residents of Allondaz are called Allondain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Allondaz is still a predominantly agricultural village. In the meantime the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, particularly in Albertville and Ugine .

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Thénésol to Mercury and the western part of Albertville. The nearest motorway connection to the A430 and a train station on the Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway line are in neighboring Albertville . Chambéry-Savoie (distance 66 km) and Geneva (92 km) are possible airports in the region .
