Rognaix is a French municipality with 478 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Albertville-1 in the Albertville arrondissement .
geography
location
Rognaix is located at 396 m , about 41 kilometers east of the prefecture of Chambéry , 73 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Geneva and 72 kilometers northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). The village is located in the middle valley of the Isère in the historical province of Tarentaise . Neighboring municipalities of Rognaix are Saint-Paul-sur-Isère in the north, Cevins and Feissons-sur-Isère in the east, La Léchère in the south and Montsapey in the west.
topography
The area of the 8.98 km 2 municipal area extends from the Isère, on the left bank of which the town center is located, in a long strip up to the eastern flank of the Grand Arc ( 2484 m ), the extreme peak in the northwest of the Vanoise massif . This strip begins at the 1791 m high Col de Basmont pass and follows the course of a small mountain stream, the Torrent de Bayet , down to the Isère. Except for small meadows on the Isère and below the Grand Arc , the communal soil is forested, the proportion of forest being 86%.
Community structure
The village of Rognaix on the valley floor of the Isère valley forms a continuous settlement area with the northern district of Le Bayet . To the south of the village center are the hamlets of Les Teppes on a slight hill and La Rochette at the very end of the Isère valley floor, which still belongs to the municipality. A few farmsteads in the mountains above the village can only be reached via forest roads.
history
The Tarentaise was already settled by the Celtic people of the Ceutrons before Roman times. Rognaix was first mentioned in the High Middle Ages, together with other parish churches in the Tarentaise, as Ecclesia de Rosnay in 1170. Other spellings are Roignacum (1184) and Rognay (1283). The place name, which occurs several times in France, goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Rhodanius .
Attractions
The village church of Saint Martin in Rognaix dates from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Your interior is in the baroque style. There are also four brick bakery houses distributed over the various districts .

With 478 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Rognaix is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. During the entire 19th and 20th centuries, the population changed little and was mostly close to 300 inhabitants. The local residents of Rognaix are called Rognairain (e) s in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
To this day, Rognaix is mainly a village characterized by forestry . The space between the village and the Isère is taken up by a large sawmill , the Scieries Réunies de Savoie with almost 40 employees. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and especially in the Albertville area .
The N90 runs as the main traffic axis of the Tarentaise on the right bank of the Isère and thus directly on the eastern edge of the municipality. It has a junction in Cevins and merges into the A430 motorway down the valley at Albertville . The left bank is accessed by the department road D66, which also connects the individual districts and hamlets. A bridge over the Isère connects the place with Cevins. The Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway also runs through the Isère Valley and has a larger train station in Albertville. The airports in the region include Chambéry-Savoie (71 km away) and Geneva (104 km away).
