The Parish Church of Cohennoz |
Cohennoz is a commune with 161 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Savoie department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Ugine in the arrondissement of Albertville .
geography
Cohennoz is located in the western Alps in the Arly valley , about 56 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva and 49 kilometers northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry (both as the crow flies). The neighboring communities are (starting from the north clockwise) Crest-Voland , Hauteluce , Villard-sur-Doron and Ugine .
The village is located at around 910 m on a steep slope of Mont Bisanne , a 1941 m high mountain on the edge of the Massif du Beaufortain . Below the village, the slope, together with the opposite Mont Charvin, forms the Arly Gorge, the riverbed of which also marks the western border of the Cohennoz municipality. The municipality covers about six kilometers of the Arly valley on its eastern side and protrudes only a little into the Massif du Beaufortain, so that the eastern border running below the Mont Bisanne summit also marks the highest point of the municipality.
The village center consists of only a few houses and the parish church. Instead, the hamlet of Le Cernix , which shares the valley shoulder of Mont Lachat with the neighboring municipality of Crest-Voland and offers access to the winter sports area, is much more developed. Les Chandelières is another hamlet halfway between Cohennoz and Le Cernix. Except for the immediate vicinity of the houses and the ski slopes above Le Cernix, the municipality is almost completely wooded.
population
With 161 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Cohennoz is one of the smallest communities in Savoy. The continuous rural exodus and emigration during the 19th and 20th centuries hit Cohennoz particularly hard and reduced the population by more than a factor of four. Only alpine tourism offered enough prospects to reverse this trend. The local residents of Cohennoz are called Cohennerain (e) s in French .

history
The place name is first mentioned in the 16th century as Cuennoz and probably goes back to the Germanic name Kuno. At that time Cohennoz belonged to the parish of Héry-sur-Ugine on the opposite side of the Arly valley. In 1766 Cohennoz achieved the status of an independent parish on the grounds that the way to the parish church of Héry was too long and difficult. Then in 1781 the construction of a separate parish church began, for which St. Peter ad Vincula was chosen as patronage . The independence as a political municipality was maintained during the French Revolution . Due to its inaccessible location in comparison with other communities, Cohennoz did not get access to the electricity supply until 1929 . The first ski lifts were installed together with the neighboring community of Crest-Voland in 1951.
Culture and sights
The slopes above Cohennoz are a destination for hikers and winter sports enthusiasts. The Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens church in the village dates back to 1781. It is a single-nave, outwardly simple structure, the interior of which is decorated in the Baroque style. There is also an Ecomusée in the village , i. H. a museum that holistically presents the cultural heritage and identity of the place. It shows everyday objects, pictures and representatives of the native flora and fauna.
Economy and Infrastructure
Only a few companies and public institutions are active in Cohennoz; the proportion of second homes and holiday homes relevant to tourism is particularly high at 88% (as of 2009).
traffic
The central Arly Valley is located off the main regional arteries and railway lines. The D71 opens up Cohennoz and connects it with the neighboring communities of Ugine and Crest-Voland, with the road several hundred meters above the river running parallel to the valley. On the valley floor below the village runs the D1212 (originally national road 212), which connects the Arve valley via Megève in the north with the Isère valley and Albertville in the south and is connected to the D71 in Ugine and Crest-Voland.
The nearest possible motorway connections are the A430 (Albertville exit, 21 km away) and the A40 (exits 20 to 22, around 35 km away). The Albertville SNCF train station is suitable for reaching Cohennoz (Cernix) by bus. Airports in the region are Geneva (89 km), Chambéry-Savoie (80 km) and Lyon-St-Exupéry (150 km).
