Villard-sur-Doron is a municipality with 712 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the French Savoie department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Ugine in the arrondissement of Albertville .

geography

Villard-sur-Doron is located in the Western Alps in the Beaufortain massif on the river Doron , about 62 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Geneva and 50 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry (both as the crow flies). The neighboring communities are Cohennoz in the north, Hauteluce in the northeast, Beaufort in the east and south, and Queige and Ugine in the west.

The community extends on both sides of the Doron, which at this point flows westward through a deeply cut high valley with flanks rising steadily up to about 2000  m . The mountain village lies at 719  m just a little above the river, and further hamlets and houses are spread over the north side, which includes the 1941  m high Mont Bisanne and part of the ski area that begins behind it. On the northern edge of the municipality is the 1633  m high Col des Saisies pass to the neighboring Arly valley . The southern part of the municipality on the north flank, turned away from the sun, is completely forested. The municipality boundary follows the mountain ranges above the valley flanks to the south and north, and the municipality floor reaches its highest point at 2280  m near Mont Mirantin ( 2460  m ).

Villard-sur-Doron has a number of other hamlets and farms, including:

  • les Billords , les Vernets and les Perrières (around 650  m ) in the valley of the Doron; below the village,
  • Manant ( 700  m ) in the valley floor upstream on the municipality border with Beaufort;
  • le Cray (approx. 850  m - 1150  m ), scattered settlement on the rise to the Col des Saisies above the village;
  • Bisanne 1500 , winter sports resort on the slope below Mont Bisanne .

history

The upper Doron Valley, originally called vallis de Lucia , had already been colonized by the Romans and in the High Middle Ages had four parishes ( quatuor ecclesias de Luciaco , 1171), one of which may have been Villard. In the 14th century, the village church of Villard was first mentioned explicitly as Ecclesia de Villars . In the Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime , Villard formed a small lordship that belonged to the possessions of the Lords of Beaufort. They pledged their property to the Lords of Faucigny in 1271 , and with the Treaty of Paris (1355) the area came to the Counts of Savoy .

In the 18th century, the place gained a certain wealth through the fact that residents temporarily emigrated during the barren winter months and carried out jewelry trading between the surrounding centers in Savoy.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Pierre of Villard-sur-Doron was built in 1672. It is single-nave and has a gallery and two side chapels inside . Its masonry stone bell tower reaches a height of 26.5 m with a side length of 4 m and is therefore noticeably slim. Its top and bell house were renovated in 1895.

A building from 1606 now houses the mayor's office ( French mairie ). There is an arboretum near les Vernets .

Economy and Infrastructure

Villard-sur-Doron is still a village dominated by agriculture and alpine farming. There are also a similar number of local small businesses. Some of the employed are commuters who work in neighboring towns and in Albertville. Around two thirds of the residential units are second homes and holiday apartments, which together with two hotels provide the tourist infrastructure.

The small winter sports resort Bisanne 1500 is part of the Espace Diamant ski area, which has almost 200 kilometers of slopes . A chair lift leads from it to the 1941 m high Mont Bisanne , about half of which belongs to Villard-sur-Doron, with ski slopes and lifts crisscrossing it.

There is a state école primaire in Villard-sur-Doron .

traffic

Villard-sur-Doron is on the D925 departmental road, which runs through the Doron valley from Albertville to Beaufort and connects it to the Isère valley via the Roselend pass . A side road branches off from here and leads through the town center to the Col des Saisies . About 15 km away, the city of Albertville offers both a motorway connection to the A430 and a SNCF train station with TGV connections. Airports in the region are Geneva (106 km), Chambéry-Savoie (76 km) and Lyon-St-Exupéry (151 km).
