topography

The area of the 7.03 km 2 municipality covers a section of the Combe de Savoie , the Isère valley between Albertville and Montmélian . It extends over the approximately two kilometers wide alluvial plain on both sides of the river and includes an approximately 100 meter high rise in the north, which belongs to the foothills of the Bauges , a pre-alpine limestone massif. The settlement area has grown together with that of Albertville and, in addition to the center of Gilly, consists of the parts La Rachy , Le Nant des Martins and La Montaz . The agricultural use of the valley level makes up 45.6% of the municipal area, while the remaining natural areas are mainly overgrown with trees (10.5%). The built-up area adds up to 19.4%, that of gardens and communal green spaces 11.3%.

history

In Roman times , the road connection between Milan and Vienne crossed the municipality, where the remains of a Roman villa and other buildings were uncovered. Gilly owned a church ( Ecclesia de Giliaco ) as early as 1170, when the parishes in the Isère Valley were first recorded . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman proper name Gillius . In Gilly there was a small rule in the Middle Ages, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy and was elevated to baronnie in 1590 .

Attractions

  • In 1970 the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa were discovered, since 1984 this has been protected as a Monument Historique . In the period that followed, the remains of the walls of other buildings as well as two aqueducts and paved paths came to light.

With 3,013 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Gilly-sur-Isère is one of the medium-sized communes in the Savoie department. After the population had been stable at around 700 during the 19th and 20th centuries, the population began to increase rapidly in the 1960s. This is due to the urbanization of Albertville, which made Gilly a suburb of this city. The locals of Gilly-sur-Isère are called Gillerain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Gilly-sur-Isère was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now many different local small businesses and some medium-sized businesses. Meanwhile, the village has also developed into a suburb of Albertville, whose workers in Albertville and the surrounding area go to work.

The two-lane Route nationale 90 runs through the municipality and merges at its western edge with the A430 motorway , which connects to the regional motorway network. Department roads connect the place with its various neighboring communities. The Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway also runs through the Isère Valley and has a larger train station in Albertville. Chambéry-Savoie (distance 58 km) and Geneva (96 km) are possible airports in the region .

education

Gilly-sur-Isère has a pre-school ( école maternelle ) and a primary school ( école primaire ).
