topography

The area of the 20.93 km² municipal area extends from the Isère, which forms the eastern municipal boundary, up to the northeast flank of the Grand Arc ( 2484  m ), the extreme peak in the northwest of the Vanoise massif . Several small mountain streams drain its irregularly shaped eastern slope towards the Isère, the most important being the Torrent de Bayet (southern municipal boundary ) and the Ruisseau des Moulins . With the exception of small meadows on the Isère and in the area of the farms, the communal soil is forested with a share of 65.5%. Above the tree line at around 1750  m , there are alpine meadows (14.7%) and rock formations (14.6%).

Community structure

The center of Saint-Paul-sur-Isère is located on the valley floor some distance from the flat banks of the Isère on an indentation in the otherwise steep valley flank. Above, a large number of homesteads and single houses as well as the two larger hamlets of Le Villard ( 570  m ) and Le Cudray ( 760  m ) are distributed over the entire slope .

history

The Tarentaise was already settled by the Celtic people of the Ceutrons before Roman times. The parish of Saint-Paul dates back to the High Middle Ages and was first mentioned in a document around 1170 at the same time as the other parishes of the Tarentaise, under the patron saint Saint-Hippolyte of the church father Hippolytus of Rome ( Ecclesia Sancti Hippolyti 1170, Curatus de Sancto Hippolyto 1317). This name was replaced during the 15th century by the local, shortened pronunciation Saint-Polyte and Saint-Pol .

In the Middle Ages until the end of the Ancien Régime there was a small rule in Saint-Paul under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy . Your permanent house in today's hamlet Le Château ( 45 ° 36 '8 "  N , 6 ° 26" 19 "  E ) has been preserved to this day and had a small round tower that was removed to the gable height of the rectangular main building.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Hippolyte dates from the 18th century. There are chapels from the 17th century in the various hamlets.
