geography

location

Cevins is located at 419  m , about 43 kilometers east of the prefecture of Chambéry , 73 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Geneva and 73 kilometers northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). The village is located in the Isère valley between Albertville and Moûtiers in the historic Tarentaise province . Neighboring municipalities of Cevins are La Bâthie and Beaufort in the north, La Léchère in the east, Feissons-sur-Isère in the south and Rognaix and Saint-Paul-sur-Isère in the west.

topography

The area of the 32.66 km 2 municipal area extends from the Isère, on the right bank of which the town center is located, to far up into the high mountains of the Beaufortain massif with elevations well over 2000  m . It includes a small side valley of the Isère, which is formed by the Torrent de la Gruvaz mountain stream . The mountain ridges adjoining the side valley to the south and east delimit the municipal area, while this extends even further in the north into the neighboring valley of the Torrent de Bénétant , which partially marks the municipal boundary . It reaches its highest point on the 2686  m high Le Grand Mont . This means that large parts of the municipality extend beyond the tree line , which is around 1800 m here . Overall, the proportion of forest in the municipal area is 44%, that with grass and low vegetation is 13%, rock and snow areas are 37.6%.

The municipality has several small lakes in the high mountains, including the Lacs de la Tempête ( 2131  m ) and the Lac des Cornaches ( 1777  m ).

Community structure

The place Cevins is divided into several parts, which have their own names, these are Bornand , La Montaz , La Roche and Luy de Four from north to south . In addition, several hamlet settlements in the mountains belong to the municipality , including:

  • La Ville ( 800  m ) on the slope above the town center,
  • Le Villard ( 1012  m ) on the slope above the town center,
  • Bénétant ( 1207  m ) below the Grand Mont .

history

The Tarentaise was already settled by the Celtic people of the Ceutrons before Roman times. From Cevins, whose name goes back to the personal name Civinus , the first documentary mention comes from the year 1110 ( Imbertus Dapifer de Civins ). Later in the 12th century it was mentioned along with other parish churches in the Tarentaise.

Attractions

The village church of Saint Nicolas from the 18th century replaced a previous building destroyed by a flood. Its facade and roof structure are inscribed as a monument historique . In the more distant hamlets above the town center there are chapels. The Château du Chagnay dates from around 1100 , a permanent house on the Calvary above the Isère, of which ruins have been preserved.

Economy and Infrastructure

Cevins was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Albertville area .

The N90 crosses as a major route of the Tarentaise the municipal area and opens it to a connection point. The N90 merges into the A430 motorway down the valley at Albertville . A bridge over the Isère connects the place with Rognaix and Saint-Paul-sur-Isère. The Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway also runs through the Isère Valley and has a larger train station in Albertville. The airports in the region include Chambéry-Savoie (71 km away) and Geneva (104 km away).
