history

The place Avanchers is first mentioned in the Middle Ages in the middle of the 13th century ( Avancheria 1258 and Curatus Avancheriorum 1278). The name goes back to avan and describes a place where willow trees are in abundance. Later spellings are Avanchiers (1638) and Avanchers-en-Tarentaise . A parish has been recorded since the 14th century, the lands belonged to the rule of Le Bois in the Ancien Régime .

The previously independent municipality of Les Avanchers merged with Aigueblanche in 1972, but this incorporation was reversed on January 1, 1988 and the municipality took the name Les Avanchers-Valmorel . A few years before that in 1976, the winter sports resort of Valmorel had opened. Since then, it has been continuously expanded and its lift systems have been modernized according to the current state of the art.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-André dates from the 17th century and has Romanesque architectural elements in addition to a Baroque interior. In the various hamlets there are chapels from the period between the 17th and 19th centuries.

population

With 784 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Les Avanchers-Valmorel is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. At the end of the 19th century a rural exodus began, so that the number of inhabitants continuously declined in the 20th century (in 1886 there were still 742 inhabitants). It was not until the winter sports resort was created that this trend was reversed in the 1980s. The local residents of Les Avanchers-Valmorel are called Avancherain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Avanchers-Valmorel was a predominantly agricultural village. Some dairy farmers are still active today , and there are also various local small-scale businesses. Only a small part of the working population uses the village as a residential community and commutes to work in the larger towns in the area.

The ski area is designed in such a way that lifts starting in a star shape from Valmorel open up the surrounding slopes and lead slopes back into the village. It is directly connected to the lifts and slopes of Saint-François-Longchamp and Combelouvière (part of La Léchère) and offers a joint lift pass (“Grand Domaine”). The operator is Domaine Skiable de Valmorel SA , which is also the largest employer in town.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road which , coming from Aigueblanche, only opens up the Morel valley and the various villages in the municipality. In the Isère valley, there is a connection to the national road N90 , which merges into the A43 motorway at Albertville . The nearest train station is around 15 km away in Moûtiers . Chambéry-Savoie (distance 94 km) and Geneva (127 km) are possible airports in the region .
