geography

location

Bonneval is located at 959  m , about 42 km east of the prefecture of Chambéry , 80 km south-southeast of the city of Geneva and 67 km east-northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). The village is located on a slope above the Isère in the historic province of Tarentaise . The commune is bordered by La Léchère to the north, east and south and Montsapey to the west . With Les Avanchers-Valmorel there is a short stretch of common border in the south.

topography

The area of the 19.58 km² municipal area includes the steeply sloping eastern slope of a ridge in the northern foothills of the Vanoise Mountains. The ridge, whose watershed forms the municipal boundary, runs in a north-south direction from the 2484  m high Mont Bellachat to the 2829  m high Grand Pic de la Lauziere . It falls in the east to the valley of the Isère and its left tributary Eau Rousse , which draws the opposite municipal boundary. This mountain stream takes in several small side streams that arise below the mountain range and drain the community area. On the Isère valley floor, the communal floor reaches its deepest point at 417  m . Except for a few parcels around the settlements, it is densely forested up to the tree line , which is here at around 1800 m . Above this limit, high pastures alternate with rock formations. Overall, the proportion of forest in the municipal area is 51.8%, that of grass areas is 36.7%.

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center, Bonneval also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Les Granges ( 857  m ) below Bonneval on the road to Pussy ,
  • Villard Soffray (around 960  m ) south of Bonneval and since 1960 seat of the municipal administration,
  • Villard Benoît (around 1000  m ) about 2 km south of Villard Soffray and upstream in the valley of the Eau Rousse .

history

The Tarentaise was already settled by the Celtic people of the Ceutrons before Roman times.

Bonneval was first mentioned in a document in the High Middle Ages , in 1132 as Bonavalis . In the 18th century the spelling Bonnaval was common. Administratively, after the annexation of Savoy to France ( Treaty of Turin , 1860) , the municipality first belonged to the arrondissement Moûtiers , and since its dissolution in 1926 to the arrondissement Albertville.

The municipality of Bonneval was incorporated into the municipality of La Léchère on January 1, 2019 together with Feissons-sur-Isère . It belonged to the canton of Moûtiers in the Arrondissement of Albertville . The community was a member of the Vallées d'Aigueblanche community association .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Pierre-de-Tarentaise dates from the 18th century. Bonneval is considered a village in which the architectural style characteristic of the Tarentaise has been authentically preserved.

With 108 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016), Bonneval was one of the smallest communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 324 inhabitants), it has stagnated at today's level since the mid-1980s. The local residents of Bonneval are called les Bonnevalain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Bonneval is characterized by its secluded steep slope, which only allows alpine and forestry to a limited extent. In addition to a few farms, there are also a few local small businesses in the village. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Notre-Dame-de-Briançon (place in La Léchère) in the Isère Valley over the Col de la Madeleine to Saint-François-Longchamp . A few kilometers away in the Isère valley runs the main Tarentaise axis in the form of the N90 expressway and the Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway line . The airports in the region are Chambéry-Savoie (83 km away) and Geneva (123 km away).

There is a state primary school ( école élémentaire ) in Bonneval .
