Feissons-sur-Isère is located at 415  m , about 42 km east of the prefecture of Chambéry , 75 km south-southeast of the city of Geneva and 72 km northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). The village is on the banks of the Isère in the historic province of Tarentaise . The Commune déléguée borders on La Léchère to the east, south and west . topography

The area of the Commune déléguée (12.10 km²) covers a section of the Isère Valley between Moûtiers and Albertville . The river crosses the Commune déléguée in a northerly direction and forms an approximately 500 m wide valley floor, which is bordered by steeply rising, wooded mountain slopes. The municipal area includes the valley floor on both sides of the river and extends in the east over the entire valley flank up to an altitude of about 1900  m . A narrow strip protrudes deeper into the Beaufortain massif and opens up the south side of the 2507  m high Grande Pointe de Bizard , below whose summit the municipality has its highest elevation.

Community structure

The center of Feissons-sur-Isère is located on the eastern edge of the valley floor. The hamlet of Feissonet on the opposite bank of the Isère also belongs to the Commune déléguée .

history

The Tarentaise was already settled by the Celtic people of the Ceutrons before Roman times. Feissons was first mentioned in a document in the High Middle Ages , in 1140 as Ecclesia Fessonis . In the 17th and 18th centuries the spellings Faisson and Fesson-sous-Briançon were common. The latter referred to the upstream Briançon (part of La Léchère) and existed until 1900 when the community was renamed what is now Feissons-sur-Isère .

The narrow point of Feissons was secured in the Middle Ages by a castle, the Château de Feissons from the 12th century, which belonged to the Lords of Briançon. It was first destroyed by the Counts of Savoy and, after being rebuilt , was taken by Henry IV in 1600 . Administratively, after the annexation of Savoy to France ( Treaty of Turin , 1860) , the municipality first belonged to the arrondissement Moûtiers , and since its dissolution in 1926 to the arrondissement Albertville.

The municipality of Feissons-sur-Isère was incorporated into the municipality of La Léchère on January 1, 2019 together with Bonneval . It belonged to the canton of Moûtiers in the Arrondissement of Albertville and was a member of the Vallées d'Aigueblanche community association .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Eusèbe from the 17th century is located higher up than the previous building and better protected from flooding. Its bell tower, destroyed during the French Revolution , was rebuilt in 1838 and raised by 4 m. The Château de Feissons now houses a restaurant.

One of the natural attractions is the Pierre Château boulder on the southern edge of the municipality, which is shaped like a fortified tower and stands in the middle of the path through the Isère Valley. Today the national road N90 is guided in such a way that it is located on its central reservation , which has been widened here. Hiking trails that open up the Beaufortain begin in Feissons. There are two mountain huts on the south side of the Grande Pointe de Bizard .
