Albertville is a French municipality with 18,899 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes in the Alps . It is the capital of the Albertville arrondissement of the same name and thus the location of a sub-prefecture . It belongs to the community association Communauté d'agglomération Arlysère and houses its administrative headquarters.
Albertville gained worldwide notoriety as the main venue for the 1992 in the region Savoy discharged XVI. Winter Olympics .
geography
Albertville is in the French Alps . The Arly river flows into the Isère there . The municipality is associated with the Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park as an access point .
The city is also known as the “City of the Four Valleys” because it is where the Tarentaise , Val d'Arly , Beaufortain and Combe de Savoie meet.
history
The city is named after King Karl Albert I , who founded it in 1836 . The predecessor town was the Cité Médiévale de Conflans ; Today it is a medieval town with a city wall above Albertville.

Sports
Albertville became internationally known as a winter sports destination, especially through the 1992 Winter Olympics. The upper reaches of the Isère are home to several of the major ski areas in the French Alps, such as La Plagne , Tignes and Les Trois Vallées .
In January 2017, the Halle Olympique in Albertville was one of eight venues for the 2017 Men's Handball World Championship in France.
